Arizona’s Boater Safety Education Program

Arizona joins more than 40 states with educational requirements for operating a boat or PWC on state waters.

By completing and passing this Arizona–approved online boating license course, you will have satisfied the educational requirement for Arizona.

It’s the Law!

Get Safe. Get Certified.

Who Needs the Card?

Per Arizona law, no one under the age of 12 may operate a motor powered vessel over 8 horsepower unless:

  • An emergency exists or...
  • Another person at least 18 years of age is on board

Even though not required in Arizona, many boaters take the boat safety course in order to save on insurance or for boating in other states that require a boating license.

Do your part to make boating in Arizona a safe, enjoyable pastime! Become an educated, responsible boater by completing the Boat Arizona course and practice what you learn.

Age Restrictions

There is no minimum age to take the online course and boater exam.

No one under the age of 12 may operate a vessel with a motor greater than 8 horsepower (which includes PWCs) unless:

  • An emergency exists or …
  • The child’s parent or legal guardian is on board or …
  • Another person at least 18 years of age is on board.

Good in U.S. States

All states that have mandatory boater education requirements will accept an Arizona Boater Education Certificate. Likewise, Arizona will accept boating education cards that are issued by states that meet NASBLA requirements. (This is known as “reciprocity.”)

Enforcement

Arizona law enforcement officers patrol the waterways to make your boating experience safe and pleasant. Cooperate with them by following the laws and guidelines.

Carry the Card Vessel operators who are required to have a Boater Education Card must carry the card on board the vessel and have it available for inspection by an enforcement officer.

Penalty Not carrying your Boater Education Card when one is required can result in a fine.

Is the Boating Card the same as a Boating License?

The Arizona Boater Education Certificate is proof that you have successfully completed an approved boating safety course. Since the boater education card does not expire and does not need to be renewed, it is not called an Arizona Boating License.
