Florida Boating License Overview

How to Boat Smart—Florida is the official boating safety course of the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission. Taking this safe boating course will allow you to get your Florida boating license online.

	Study the Florida safe boating course material and take one or more Practice Tests—free of charge.
	Take the Florida Boating Exam. Pay $24.50—one time only, after you pass. When you pass, you will receive your permanent Florida Boating Safety Education I.D. Card by mail within 2-3 weeks.

What it's called depends on your state, but it represents the same thing—proof of completion of an approved boater education course. Florida Law Requires Classroom Course for Violators: Florida law (327.731, F.S.) requires that anyone convicted of:

• A criminal boating violation or ...
• A non-criminal boating safety infraction that resulted in a boating accident or ...
• Two non-criminal boating infractions within a twelve month period

must enroll in, attend, and successfully complete a classroom boating safety course and file proof of completion of the course to the FWC within 90 days of completion. Until this requirement is met, the violator's privilege to operate a vessel in Florida is suspended. A violation of this is a second degree misdemeanor. This law requires attendance of a classroom course. Correspondence or online course completion is not acceptable for meeting the course requirement for violators.
