Florida Boating Law and Exams

America's Boating Course contains general boating education material applicable to all operators of boats and personal watercraft. The America's Boating Course online and print material is supplemented by an additional document—The Legal Requirements of Boating—which contains material specific to this state.

The online course material on boat and PWC (jet ski) safety in America's Boating Course, as supplemented by Florida: The Legal Requirements of Boating, is accepted by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. You can complete the course material for boater safety certification or just take the online course to improve your boating knowledge. Read more about the online boating test for certification at the bottom of this page, or just click below to get started.

A few easy steps is all it takes for you to comply with the law and save money:

  1. Study the America's Boating Course material and Florida: The Legal Requirements of Boating.
  2. Take the Practice Test as many times as you like—free of charge—to ensure you've mastered the information. A different set of questions is presented each time you take the online boating test.
  3. Then, if you wish to become safety certified, take the Certification Exam. Follow the directions found at the beginning of the Certification Exam. Testing is provided by Boat Ed, which is committed to protecting student privacy and confidentiality. Boat Ed's Privacy Policy fully explains the terms and conditions surrounding the use of the student information collected. There is a $10 charge for boating safety certification testing that will be collected online, payable by a valid credit card and collected via a secure transaction using Verisign Secure Server Digital ID. This fee is collected whether you pass or fail.
  4. If you pass the online boating test (achieve a score of 80% or better), you will receive a boater safety certification card in the mail, recognized and accepted by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
  5. Passing the exam will also make you eligible for a discount on your boat or PWC insurance with many insurance providers. Send a copy of your certificate to your boat insurance agency and start receiving your savings!
