These include equipment requirements, such as for life jackets, fire extinguishers, backfire flame arrestors, ventilation systems, mufflers, navigation lights, sound signals, visual distress signals, and diver-down flags. Students learned which vessels need to be registered and how to do so, and how to to correctly place certificate numbers and registration decals on a vessel. The age restrictions on operation were explained, along with descriptions of unlawful behaviors that should be avoided when operating a vessel. Students also learned about the dangers of consuming alcohol or drugs while boating, the legal requirements specific to PWCs and towing skiers, the laws pertaining to pollutant disposal, and when and how to report a boating accident.
