What is the Kansas boater education card?

  • The Kansas boater education card (also referred to as the Kansas Boaters License) is proof that a boater has demonstrated basic boating knowledge by passing an approved boating safety course and exam.

Do I have to get a Kansas boater education card (Kansas boater's license)?

  • Any person born on or after January 1, 1989, and less than 21 years of age, must complete an approved boater safety education course in order to operate a motorboat or sailboat on Kansas public waters unless accompanied by and under the direct supervision of a person over the age of 17. The supervising person must:

    • Possess a certificate of completion of an approved boater safety education course or...
    • Be exempt from this requirement.
  • Persons 12 to 15 years old who want to operate a personal watercraft by themselves are required to successfully complete an approved boater safety education course and have a valid boater safety education certificate.

  • You must be at least 10 years old to take the online boat safety exam.

  • The online Certification Exam costs $24.50—one time only, after you pass. There is no charge for the Kansas boater education card .

When will I receive my Kansas boater education card in the mail?

  • Your Kansas boater education card will be mailed to your home within 7 - 10 business days after you pass the exam.

Do I get a temporary card or certificate until my permanent boater's license arrives?

  • Upon passing the exam, you have the option of ordering an expedited certificate, which will be mailed or faxed the next business day. There is a $10 charge for the expedited certificate.

How do I replace my boater education card if I’ve lost it or it has been damaged?

  • A duplicate can be issued for a $5 charge if the student took (and passed) the Boat Kansas online course. To obtain a duplicate Kansas card, mail the request with a check for $5, payable to BOAT KANSAS, to:

    Be sure to include the student's full name and date of birth in the mailed request for a duplicate card. You may also phone Customer Service to request the duplicate and pay by credit card.
