It's the Law: Required Equipment

Sound-Producing Devices

In periods of reduced visibility or whenever a vessel operator needs to signal his or her intentions or position, a sound-producing device is essential.

If on State Waters
Vessel 16 feet up to 26 feet long and under engine power Whistle capable of producing a blast of 2 seconds or more and audible for at least 1/2 mile is required.
Vessel 26 feet long or longer and under engine power Whistle capable of producing a blast of 2 seconds or more and audible for at least 1 mile is required.
If on Federally Controlled Waters
Vessel less than 65.6 feet long (includes PWCs) Whistle or horn capable of producing a blast of 4 seconds or more and audible for at least 1/2 mile is required.
Vessel 65.6 feet long or longer Whistle or horn and a bell capable of producing a blast of 4 seconds or more and audible for at least 1 mile are required.
