Official Minnesota boating safety course Minnesota Dept. of Natural Resources official seal

Hello, boater! Minnesota's online boating course has moved. Click here to go to the latest version of the Boat Minnesota course—the official boating safety course of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

Types of Engines and Drives

The types of engines and drives on boats or other powered vessels, such as a PWC, are outboard, inboard, and stern drives. Outboards have more power per pound of weight than do inboard engines. Inboards have automotive engines adapted to operate in marine environments. Stern drives have quieter and more fuel-efficient engines.
