  • The Missouri boater education certificate (also referred to as the Missouri Boaters License) is proof that a boater has demonstrated basic boating knowledge by passing an approved boating safety course and exam.

Do I have to get a Missouri Boating Safety Certification Card (Missouri boater's license)?

  • All persons born after January 1, 1984, who operate any vessel on the lakes of the state of  Missouri must have on board his or her boating safety identification card issued by the Missouri State Water Patrol. The card is obtained by passing an approved boating safety course.

  • The steps required to get your Missouri boaters license are as follows:
    • Study the Missouri boating safety course material.
    • Take the Missouri online boating exam.
    • Pay for your exam and find out your grade.
    • Upon passing, you may purchase your permanent Missouri Boating Safety Certification Card during your online session, which will then be mailed to you by the Missouri State Water Patrol.

  • The online Certification Exam costs $15.
  • Upon passing the exam, your permanent Missouri Boating Safety Certification Card my be purchased online for an additional $15.50.

When will I receive my Missouri Boating Safety Certification Card in the mail?

  • Your Missouri Boating Safety Certification Card will be mailed to your home within 45 days after you pass the exam.

Do I get a temporary card or certificate until my permanent boater's license arrives?

  • Upon passing the exam, you will be able to immediately print out a temporary Missouri Boating Safety Certification Card online, which will be valid for 60 days.

How do I replace my Boating Safety Certification Card if I’ve lost it or it has been damaged?

  • Contact the Missouri State Water Patrol, which issues the card. A duplicate can be requested for $10 but the applicant must be verified in the boater certification database. The Missouri State Water Patrol may be reached at 573-751-3333.
