It's the Law: On the Water With Your Vessel

Vessel Accidents

  • A vessel operator involved in a collision, accident, or other casualty must:
    • Assist anyone who has been injured or is in danger from the accident unless doing so would endanger others or put the operator at risk.
    • Provide in writing his or her name, address, and identification of the vessel to an injured person and to the owner of damaged property.
  • Accident reports are required by law and provide valuable information for use in the prevention of future vessel accidents. An accident must be reported immediately to the local sheriff’s office or a Fish, Wildlife & Parks law enforcement officer if it caused:
    • The death or disappearance of any person.
    • An injury requiring medical treatment beyond first aid.
    • Property damage in excess of $100.
  • Boating accident report forms are available from the county sheriff’s office, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks offices and Fish, Wildlife & Parks law enforcement officers.
