It's the Law: Before Going Out on Your Vessel

Local Regulations

  • Local waterways may have specific equipment and operational restrictions in addition to those in this handbook. Check for local regulations before you go out, especially if you are planning to boat in a water supply reservoir.
  • For specific information about vessel and motor restrictions on lakes or rivers, visit www.fwp.mt.gov online.

Enforcement

  • Authorized Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks officers have peace officer status for enforcing boating regulations. Sheriffs, peace officers, and U.S. Coast Guard law enforcement officers also have authority to enforce these provisions.
  • Fish, Wildlife & Parks wardens are authorized to stop, halt, or inspect vessels in order to enforce Montana laws.
