It's the Law: Especially for Skiers and Those Towing
Them
Vessel operators towing a person(s) on
water-skis or other towed devices must obey these laws.
Towing Skiers
- Water-skiing and other towed recreation is not allowed between sunset and sunrise.
- At least two people must be in the towing vessel: an operator and a person to observe the skier. If the operator is 12 or younger, the observer must be at least 18.
If towing a person on skis or other device with a PWC, the PWC should be rated to carry at least three people—the operator, the observer, and the retrieved skier.
- Anyone towed by a vessel must wear a U.S. Coast Guard–approved PFD.
- Water-skiers must not approach within 50 feet of swimmers or enter a designated swimming area.
Hand Signals for Skiers
Knowing proper hand signals will help the skier(s)
communicate with their vessel operator or the observer.
