A Message from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources
Launch
into fun, and let the festivities begin! An Ohio odyssey on the
waterways can guarantee a sampling of many different types of boating
experiences to appeal to all champions of the recreation. Scenic
streams for paddling, idyllic lakes for sailing, and wide open
expanses for open throttle cruising entice many to be part of the
adventure. Waterways from Lake Erie to the Ohio River, and all
points in between, offer a panoramic view of the water heritage
in the state.
Inherent with the thrill of the sport are dangers and risks which
may be encountered. Many of these risks can be avoided or greatly
diminished with the proper planning, training, experience, and
common sense. Educating yourself about safe boating practices,
proper operating procedures, and dealing with dangerous conditions
on the water can help reduce the chances for a calamity on the
water. Taking a boating course is the first step in this continuing
process of striving to be a knowledgeable boater.
Maximize your possibilities for a positive boating experience,
and minimize the risks by putting safety, responsibility, and courtesy
on board with you for each new boating excursion.
Division of Watercraft
The Division of Watercraft has the pleasure of serving nearly
3.4 million Ohioans who go boating in the state each year, plus
many out-of-state visitors who also enjoy our wealth of waterways.
It is with all of these recreational enthusiasts in mind that this
boating agency identified its mission to provide the finest boating
services, facilities, protection, and education for users of Ohio’s
waterways through the innovative and wise use of our resources.
Established in 1960, the Division of Watercraft was charged with
responsibility to administer the Ohio boating safety program, administer
the watercraft registration and titling program, act as the refuge
and small boat harbor agency, administer aids to navigation on
certain waters, and administer the litter and sanitation program
as it pertains to watercraft. Staff members from the central office
and field offices earnestly strive to serve the public to fulfill
these fundamental mission components.
Ohio’s program ranks as one of the ten safest for recreational
boating in the country. Not only is safety stressed, but the division
also works to maximize efforts to ensure that all waterway users
will have the opportunity to have fun and enjoy themselves when
boating in Ohio.
Boat Smart!
You have made a significant decision by choosing to
be an educated boater. Taking a boating course is an important
initial step in the ongoing process of being an informed, educated
boater. This course has taught you the basic concepts, but there
is much more to be learned. In addition, laws change, technology
evolves, and even waterways go through seasonal transitions.
That is why it is important to involve yourself continuously in
the boating safety learning process.
The Division of Watercraft is dedicated to providing
information to boaters. Call or visit one of our offices to select
current brochures on boating. Explore the division's
website to
learn more about registering and titling watercraft, education
opportunities, grant opportunities, boating and the environment,
new laws, current news releases, and helpful tips when boating.
