Official Oregon boating safety course Oregon State Marine Board logo!

Hello, boater! Oregon's online boating course has moved. Click here to go to the latest version of the Boat Oregon course—the official boating safety course of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Docking

Before docking, remember to reduce speed and use reverse gear to stop well away from the dock. Then determine the wind and/or current direction.

If there is no wind or current, when close enough, have a passenger step on shore and secure the bow line.

If the wind or current direction is toward the dock, let the wind or current carry your boat to the dock.

If the wind or current direction is away from the dock, approach at a sharp angle and use reverse to stop when close to the dock. Then put the boat in forward gear briefly, turning the steering whell hard away from the dock to swing in the stern.
