It's The Law: Before Going Out on Your Vessel

Legal Requirements for Trailers

  • Texas law requires proper lighting on trailers, including turn signals and tail and brake lights.
  • Also, the state requires that trailers be registered with your county tax assessor just like your automobile.
  • Trailers designed for heavy loads (total weight greater than 4,500 pounds) must be equipped with brakes.
  • All towing vehicles must be connected to the trailer by safety chains or a cable of sufficient strength to maintain connection under all conditions.
  • Contact the tax assessor in your county for complete details on requirements for your trailer.
