A Message from the Education Director

Dear Student:

Recreational boating in Texas has more people and families enjoying our waterways each year. So, it is wise to prepare yourself for both the fun and the responsibility of boating.

In September 1997, the Texas Legislature passed a law requiring some operators of boats and personal watercraft to take an approved boater education safety course. This and other requirements are explained in more detail in your manual.

Texas has more than 1,260,000 surface acres of freshwater lakes, 2,111,000 surface acres of saltwater bays, and some 80,000 miles of rivers and streams. Each year, Texans use motorboats, sailboats, canoes, kayaks, and rafts on these waterways for swimming, fishing, skiing, pleasure cruising, and hunting. It is essential that boat operators and their passengers act responsibly and safely.

The Texas Boater Education Course is designed to give you a basic knowledge of water safety laws, boat types, and safe and courteous boat operation. It is not only for beginning boaters but also includes information for experienced boaters who want to refresh their knowledge and stay abreast of new boating laws.

Boating is fun. Safe boating is even more fun...and it makes good sense.

Sincerely,

Brandi Bradford signature
