What is the Virginia boating safety education certificate?
The Virginia boating safety education certificate (also referred to as the Virginia Boaters License) is proof that a boater has demonstrated basic boating knowledge by passing an approved boating safety course and exam. Boat Ed’s online boating safety course for Virginia has been approved and accepted for certification by the Virginia Department of Game and Fisheries since 2001.
Do I have to get the Virginia boating safety education certificate (Virginia boater's license)?
As of July 1, 2009, all PWC operators 20 years old and younger must complete a boating safety course. This is the beginning of the phase-in of the Education Compliance Requirement for all Virginia boaters:
- PWC operators 35 years of age or younger shall meet the requirements by July 1, 2010.
- PWC operators 50 years of age or younger and motorboat operators 20 years of age or younger shall meet the requirements by July 1, 2011.
- All PWC operators, regardless of age, and motorboat operators 30 years of age or younger shall meet the requirements by July 1, 2012.
- Motorboat operators 40 years of age or younger shall meet the requirements by July 1, 2013.
- Motorboat operators 45 years of age or younger shall meet the requirements by July 1, 2014.
- Motorboat operators 50 years of age or younger shall meet the requirements by July 1, 2015.
- All motorboat operators,regardless of age,shall meet the requirements by July 1, 2016.
In 2007, the Virginia General Assembly enacted a law to establish a boating safety education compliance requirement. The requirement for boating safety education is phased-in over several years. Effective July 1, 2009, the course requirements will apply to all PWC operators 20 years of age or younger. Effective July 1, 2010, the course requirements apply to all PWC operators 35 years of age or younger.
What is the minimum age to obtain the Virginia boating safety education certificate?
There is no minimum age to take the online boat safety exam.
