How the Course Works

Learning: Boating Safety

To help you become a better informed and safer operator, the course is broken down into 6 easy-to-understand units that you can complete at your own pace:

  • Unit 1 – Before Getting Underway
  • Unit 2 – Getting Out on the Water
  • Unit 3 – Navigation and Safe Operation
  • Unit 4 – (none)'s Legal Requirements of Boating
  • Unit 5 – Boating Emergencies
  • Unit 6 – Enjoying Water Sports

Assessment: Unit Quizzes

As you go through the course, you'll take a quiz at the end of each unit to determine how well you're understanding the boater safety topics.

Each unit quiz requires a passing score of 70% or greater before you're allowed on to the next unit.

If you don't pass a unit quiz, don't worry. You'll just go back and study the unit and then try the quiz again.

Mastery: Course Completion

When you complete all units, you'll take the online boating license Boating License Certification Exam. (We also offer a practice test that you can take first.)

The final exam covers all the course material and you will need to score an 80% or greater to pass. will assess your knowledge of boating safely on Alabama waters. (If you fail the final exam, there is no penalty. You can retake the exam as many times as you like until you pass.)
