Alaska’s Boater Safety Education Program

By completing and passing this Alaska–approved online boating certificate course, you will have improved your boater safety by learning Alaska's boating laws and guidelines.

If you plan to boat in states other than Alaska, you may have to meet educational requirements for operating a boat or PWC on those state waters.

It’s Smart!

Get Safe. Get Certified.

Who Needs the Card?

Although not required in Alaska, many boaters take the boat safety course in order to save on insurance or for boating in other states that require a certificate or boating license.

Age Restrictions

Alaska does not have any minimum age requirements for vessel operators.

There is no minimum age to take the online course and boater exam.

All states, territories, and provinces will recognize boating education cards that meet NASBLA requirements and Canadian Pleasure Craft Operator Cards that meet Transport Canada’s requirements. (This is known as “reciprocity.”)

Whether or not your state requires boater education, learning about the rules of the water, along with your state’s boating laws and regulations, can keep you safe when on the water.

Carry the Card Vessel operators who are required to have a Boater Education Card in their state must carry the card on board the vessel and have it available for inspection by an enforcement officer.

Penalty Not carrying your Boater Education Card when one is required in your state can result in a fine.

Is the Boating Card the same as a Boating License?

The Alaska Boater Education Certificate is proof that you have successfully completed an approved boating safety course. Since the boater education card does not expire and does not need to be renewed, it is not called an Alaska Boating License.
