Non-residents of Canada must meet the following proof of competency requirements.

  • If you are a pleasure craft operator and are visiting Canada in a boat that is not registered or licensed in Canada, you:
    • Must carry proof of residency, such as a passport, on board the boat at all times and…
    • Are exempt from carrying proof of competency for the first 44 days you are operating in Canada and…
    • Must have proof of competency on board the boat at all times after 45 consecutive days.
  • If you are operating a pleasure craft that is licensed or registered in Canada, you must carry proof of residency and proof of competency on board the pleasure craft at all times.

For non-residents, proof of competency can be:

  • A Pleasure Craft Operator Card or…
  • A specified Marine Certificate or…
  • Proof of competency that meets the requirements of your own state or country, such as proof of completion of an approved boating safety course, or…
  • A completed safety checklist for a rented boat—good only while the boat is rented from a rental agency or from a representative of a rental agency.
