Boater Education Requirement
The Oregon Mandatory Boater Education Law passed in 1999. It requires all Oregon recreational powerboaters operating a boat powered by greater than 10 horsepower (hp) to complete an approved boater education course and apply for an Oregon Boater Education Card. This card is required for anyone operating the boat and must be carried on board.
Out-of-state boaters are required to carry their state’s boating education card while operating a motorboat over 10 hp. If the state doesn’t require or offer boating safety education, they will need to take the Oregon Mandatory Boating Safety Education course and purchase and carry the Oregon card before operating on Oregon waters.
