Broaching can also occur in heavy waves on open water.

  • In heavy waves on open water, broaching occurs when you paddle too quickly when traveling with the waves and run into the backside of the wave ahead of you. This turns the paddlecraft so that it’s broadside to the waves, causing you to lose control of your paddlecraft and possibly capsize.
  • To avoid broaching in heavy waves:
    • Select the correct paddlecraft for the conditions.
    • Slow down so that you are paddling at the same speed that the waves are moving.
    • Stay off the water unless you are experienced enough to handle tough conditions.
