Low-head dams may or may not be marked with signs or aids to navigation warnings. To the trained eye, they can be identified by a horizontal line (----------) going across the river from upstream.

Low-head dam rescue is one of the most dangerous types of rescues. Without planning and training, the rescuers can quickly become victims themselves.
