Water Rescue Core Values

The Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission (PFBC) core water rescue values are based upon the acronym SAFE RESCUE. For any rescue to be successful, rescue personnel must understand these core values:

Self-rescue skill mastered

Adequate backup is critical

Follow the rescue sequence (self-rescue, shore, boat, go/direct contact, helicopter)

Equipment use practiced

Rescue and recovery approached with distinction

Evaluate personal and team ability

Stress planning and practice

Cooperation among everyone involved in the rescue operation

Understand the power of water

Environmental conditions complicate a rescue
