1765: Patent for the First Cork Life Jacket

Dr. John Wilkinson observed that casualties among sailors could be prevented by wearing a flotation device. In 1765, he obtained a British patent for the first cork life jacket. From 1765 through the 1850s, several developments occurred in wearable flotation devices, usually made of cork.
