After a series of steamboat disasters involving equipment failure, the U.S. Congress passed the Steamboat Act in 1852 to improve the laws governing maritime safety inspection. The act included requirements for equipment such as life jackets and floats for all passengers. Today, the maritime safety inspection duties are assumed by the U.S. Coast Guard.
