In 1928, Peter Markus, a Minnesota retailer, invented and produced the first inflatable life jacket. The initial life jacket was made from black rubber. The color was eventually changed to orange for military use so that the wearers could be easily seen in the water. Visibility remains a critical part of an effective life jacket.
