Course Outline

Properly sizing and fitting a life jacket requires several considerations.

  • Comfort and Mobility: A correctly fitted life jacket is more comfortable to wear, which encourages people to keep it on while boating, swimming, or participating in water sports. Comfortable life jackets also allow for better mobility, enabling the wearer to move freely in the water.
  • Visibility and Identification: A well-fitted life jacket is less likely to come off in the water, making it easier for rescuers to locate and identify individuals in distress. Properly sized life jackets often come with reflective strips or bright colors, enhancing visibility in low-light conditions.
  • Compliance With Regulations: Federal and state laws require the carriage of properly sized life jackets with required wear for specific passengers. Ensuring compliance with these regulations not only avoids legal penalties but also promotes water safety for everyone on board.
