Traditional labels identified the life jacket’s type: I, II, III, or V.

Type I: Offshore Life Jackets

  • Minimum buoyancy: 22 pounds for adults (11 pounds for child size)
  • Intended for open, rough, or remote waters
  • Designed for cruising, racing, and fishing offshore, when boating alone, or in stormy conditions
  • Provides the most buoyancy
  • Designed to turn an unconscious person face-up in the water
  • Recommended for long hours in the water
