Traditional labels identified the life jacket’s type: I, II, III, or V.

Type III: Flotation Aids

  • Minimum buoyancy: 15.5 pounds for adults
  • Designed for conscious users in calm, inland waters for activities such as sailing regattas, water sports, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and during personal watercraft operation
  • Comfortable for extended wear
  • May include inflatable options which are more comfortable but not meant for children under 16
  • May not turn an unconscious person face-up
