Measuring for Proper Sizing
For adults, it’s your chest size, not your weight, that dictates the size of the life jacket you require. (However, for children, their weight determines their size.) Measure the circumference of your chest at its widest point to determine your chest size. Consult the size recommendations provided by the life jacket manufacturer to identify the appropriate size for you. People have different body shapes; what is important is that the life jacket fits snug and comfortable.
Children’s vests are labeled for infant, child, or youth. In order to determine the appropriate size, you will use their weight:
- Infant Life Jackets: less than or equal to 33 pounds
- Child Life Jackets: over 33 pounds and less than or equal to 55 pounds
- Youth Life Jackets: over 55 pounds and less than or equal to 88 pounds
- Adult Life Jackets: greater than 88 pounds
