On Screen: How to Use an Inflatable Life Jacket

Life Jacket Association

Using an inflatable life jacket, also known as a personal flotation device, PFD, or life vest, is crucial for water safety. There are six simple steps to using an inflatable life jacket.

On Screen: 1. Check the type and condition

First, check the type and condition. Inspect the life jacket for any signs of damage, such as tears, punctures, or leaks. Make sure all components—inflator, straps, and buckles—are in good working condition.

On Screen: 2. Confirm proper sizing for weight and chest size

Second, wearing the life jacket properly. Put the life jacket on before entering the water. Make sure it is the appropriate size for your weight and body type.

On Screen: 3. Make sure inflation chamber is on the front side of your body

Third, open the life jacket and slip it over your head, with the inflation chamber on your front.

On Screen: 4. Adjust straps for proper fit

Fourth, adjust the straps. Ensure a snug fit by adjusting the straps. The life jacket should be tight enough that it doesn't ride up, but still allows for comfortable movement. Fasten all buckles and straps securely.

On Screen: 5. Inflate the life jacket

Fifth, inflate the life jacket. If the life jacket is not already inflated, locate the inflation mechanism. There are usually two types of inflatable life jackets.

On Screen: Automatic Inflation

Automatic inflation. This kind of life jacket is activated by water immersion. Ensure the water-sensitive element is intact and not damaged.

On Screen: Manual Inflation

Manual inflation. This kind of life jacket is inflated by pulling a cord or lever. Make sure the pull cord is accessible and not tangled. Only manually inflate the life jacket when you're in the water and need assistance.

On Screen: 6. Deflate and dearm the life jacket

Lastly, deflate and rearming the life jacket. After use, deflate the life jacket by pressing the oral inflation valve or using the deflation tabs. Remember, if you have an inflatable life jacket with a CO2 cartridge, it needs to be rearmed after each use. Replace the used cartridge with a new one, following the manufacturer's instructions.

So, now we need to talk about regular maintenance. Periodically inspect your inflatable life jacket for any signs of wear, damage, or corrosion. Check the expiration date on the CO2 cartridges and replace them if needed. Store the life jacket in a cool, dry place when not in use.

Understanding your equipment. Read the manufacturer's instructions and familiarize yourself with the specific features and operation of your inflatable life jacket. Remember, a life jacket is a crucial piece of safety equipment. And using it correctly can greatly increase your chances of staying safe in the water.

Always follow the manufacturer's guidelines for your specific life jacket model. And thank you for staying safe on the water.
