In Alabama, certain operators must obtain a Boat Operator's Certification to legally operate a vessel on Alabama waters. Alabama does not issue a traditional “boating license,” but it does require boater education and certification for specific operators.
To meet the requirement, eligible operators must complete an Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA)'s Marine Patrol Division–approved boat operator education process and receive the Alabama Boat Operator's Certification. This serves as the required proof that the operator has met the state’s boating education standards.

You can earn your Alabama Boat Operator's Certification by completing Alabama’s approved boat operator certification process. Alabama recognizes multiple ways to meet the requirements, including options that allow boaters to choose what best fits their schedule.

Alabama allows boaters to complete an approved internet-based boat operator certification course. Upon successful completion, eligible students may obtain their Alabama Boat Operator's Certification through the required state process.
Alabama also provides an in-person testing/certification process through official state channels, allowing applicants to complete the certification requirements and obtain their Boat Operator's Certification through approved procedures.
Alabama Boat Operator's Certification applies to operation on Alabama waters. When boating outside Alabama, operators should always check the laws of the destination state, since boating education requirements and age restrictions may differ.
