In Iowa, you may need to complete an Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IA DNR)-approved boating safety course and carry proof of completion to legally operate certain motorized vessels.
Iowa does not issue a traditional “boating license,” but it does require boater education for specific operators. Successful completion of an approved course results in a Boater Education Certificate, which must be carried when required by law.
Iowa law requires an Iowa Boater Education Certificate for the following operators:
- Anyone 12 through 17 years of age operating a vessel powered by more than 10 horsepower, including a personal watercraft (PWC), unless accompanied on board by a responsible adult at least 18 years old who is experienced in operating the vessel.
Persons required to have successfully completed boater education must carry their Boater Education Certificate on board and make it available upon request by an enforcement officer.
You can earn your Iowa Boater Education Certificate by completing an IA DNR-approved boating safety education course and passing the course exam. Iowa recognizes multiple ways to complete boater education.
Approved formats include:
-
Virtual/Internet Course:
This format lets you complete Iowa boater education using interactive online lessons and approved course materials. Upon successful completion, you will receive your IA DNR boater education certificate by mail.
-
Classroom/In-Person Option:
Iowa also offers classroom boating education courses where students learn alongside other boaters with instruction from an approved provider. These courses cover safe boating practices, navigation rules, state requirements, and responsible operation.
-
Home-Study/Correspondence Option:
Iowa also provides a correspondence option for boaters who prefer a home-study format. Students complete the course using approved materials and follow IA DNR instructions to meet certification requirements.
Iowa's Boater Education Certificate may be accepted in other states that recognize NASBLA-approved boating education.
When boating outside Iowa, operators should always review the laws of the destination state, since boater education requirements and age restrictions can vary.

You can take a NASBLA-sanctioned paddlesports safety course to learn safe practices for non-motorized crafts such as canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards. This course focuses on paddlesports safety but does not replace Iowa's boating safety certificate requirement when operating motorized vessels.
