Age and Operator Restrictions

Anyone born after January 1, 1999, who wishes to recreationally operate a motorboat greater than 25 horsepower or a personal watercraft on Maine’s inland waters and its territorial sea will need to successfully complete an approved boater safety and education course prior to operating such motorboat or personal watercraft.

A person under 12 years of age may not operate a motorboat propelled by machinery of more than 10 horsepower unless under the immediate supervision of a person in the motorboat who is at least 16 years of age and has completed an approved boater safety and education course.

No one under 16 years of age may operate a PWC.

Enforcement

Maine law enforcement officers patrol the waterways to make your boating experience safe and pleasant. Cooperate with them by following the laws and guidelines.

Carry the Card: Vessel operators who are required to have a Boater Education Card must carry the card on board the vessel and have it available for inspection by an enforcement officer.

Penalty: Not carrying your Boater Education Card when one is required can result in a fine.

Reciprocity

For visiting boaters, all states, territories, and provinces will recognize boating education cards that meet NASBLA requirements and Canadian Pleasure Craft Operator Cards that meet Transport Canada’s requirements. (This is known as “reciprocity.”)
