To operate a vessel legally in Mississippi, certain boaters must complete a Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, & Parks (MDWFP)-approved boater education course and earn a Mississippi Boater Education Certificate.
Mississippi does not issue a traditional “boating license,” but state law requires boater education for specific operators. Successful completion of an approved course results in a Boater Education Certificate, which must be carried on board when required by law.
Mississippi law requires boater education certification for the following operators:
- All persons born after June 30, 1980, who operate a vessel on Mississippi waters.
- Operators under 12 years of age must be accompanied on board by someone at least 21 years old.
Operators who are required to have a Boater Education Certificate must carry the certificate on board while operating a vessel and present it to law enforcement upon request.
You can earn your Mississippi Boater Education Certificate by completing an MDWFP-approved boater education course.
Mississippi-approved course formats include:
-
Virtual/Internet Course:
Approved internet-based courses allow students to complete Mississippi’s boater education requirements remotely using interactive instruction and visual learning tools. After successfully completing the course and exam, students receive their Mississippi Boater Education Certificate by mail.
-
Classroom Course:
Mississippi also authorizes in-person classroom boater education courses taught by approved instructors. These courses cover state boating laws, navigation rules, and safe operation practices. Upon successful completion, students receive their Boater Education Certificate.
Mississippi Boater Education Certificates are valid for life and do not require renewal.
Mississippi Boater Education Certificates are issued in accordance with NASBLA standards. Mississippi also recognizes NASBLA-approved boater education certificates issued by other states for operation on Mississippi waters.
When boating outside Mississippi, operators should always review the laws of the destination state, as additional age limits or requirements may apply.
