To operate a motorized vessel in Nevada, you may need to complete a boating education requirement and obtain a Nevada Boater Education Certificate by passing an approved boater education course. Nevada does not issue a traditional “boating license,” but the state requires education for certain operators and issues a Boater Safety Card to show successful completion of that requirement.
In Nevada, anyone born on or after January 1, 1983, must complete a boating education course approved by the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) and carry a Boater Education Certificate to operate a motorized vessel powered by more than 15 horsepower on Nevada waters.
This requirement applies to motorboats and personal watercraft (PWC) that meet the horsepower threshold. There is no minimum age to take the boating safety course itself, but you must meet the age and performance criteria of the education requirement to legally operate qualifying vessels.
Operators who are required to have the card must carry it on board and present it to law enforcement upon request. Failure to carry the card when required can result in fines or other penalties.
You can earn your Nevada Boater Education Certificate by completing an NDOW-approved boater education course and passing the associated exam.
Approved courses can be taken online, through correspondence (paper mail), or in person. After successfully completing the course and exam with a passing score, you receive the Boater Safety Card showing compliance with Nevada’s boating education requirements.
Once issued, the card does not expire and does not require renewal, making it valid for life.
While Nevada’s Boater Safety Card is issued for Nevada compliance, many states that participate in NASBLA standards recognize boating education certificates that meet or exceed their own requirements. Boaters should always check the specific laws of the state where they plan to boat to ensure compliance before operating a vessel there.

Nevada’s formal boating education requirement applies specifically to motorized vessels and PWC. Operators of non-motorized watercraft such as canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards are not required by Nevada law to hold a Boater Safety Card.
