In Ohio, boating safety education is required for certain operators to legally operate a vessel on Ohio waters. Ohio does not issue a traditional “boating license,” but it does require boating safety education for specific operators.
Ohio boating safety education requirements are administered by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Parks and Watercraft.
Ohio law requires boater education for the following operators:
- Anyone born on or after January 1, 1982, who operates a vessel powered by more than 10 horsepower on Ohio waters
Operators who are required to have proof of boater education must be able to provide it when requested by law enforcement.
You can earn an Ohio Boater Education Certificate by completing an ODNR-approved boating safety education course. Ohio provides more than one way to become certified, allowing boaters to choose what works best for their schedule.
Approved formats include:
-
Virtual/Internet Course:
Ohio allows boaters to complete an approved online boating safety education course. After successfully completing the course and passing the test, students receive an Ohio Boater Education Certificate as proof they have met Ohio’s requirements.
-
Classroom/In-Person Option:
Ohio also offers classroom boating safety education through approved organizations and instructors. These courses cover safe operation, navigation rules, and Ohio boating laws. After successful completion, students receive boating safety certification as proof they have met Ohio’s requirements.
Ohio Boater Education Certificates are valid for life and do not require renewal.
Ohio boating education and operator requirements apply to operation on Ohio waters. When boating outside Ohio, operators should always review the laws of the destination state, since boating education requirements and minimum operator ages may vary by location.

You can take a NASBLA-sanctioned paddlesports safety course to learn safe practices for non-motorized crafts such as canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards. This course focuses on paddlesports safety but does not replace Ohio’s boating safety certificate requirement when operating motorized vessels.

Popular Boating Locations
Lake Erie
The shallowest and warmest of the Great Lakes, Lake Erie is known for swimming, fishing, and miles of varied shoreline. Boaters can explore remote stretches for birdwatching or visit active waterfront cities like Toledo and Sandusky. State parks along the lake offer camping, beaches, and boat launches.
Grand Lake St. Marys
The largest lake entirely within Ohio; this shallow lake is popular for fishing, boating, and watersports. State park facilities include campsites, beaches, and boating access, with no-wake zones near shore and open areas for skiing and tubing.
Tappan Lake
A state park lake offering boating, fishing, swimming, and camping, along with marinas and multiple launch points. The lake provides a mix of recreation and shoreline amenities.
Alum Creek Reservoir
Located near Columbus, this large reservoir features multiple boat ramps, year-round access, a long swimming beach, and strong fishing opportunities. Open water and surrounding parkland make it a popular central Ohio boating spot.
Ohio River
With an abundance of launch sites along the shoreline, the Ohio River supports everything from short day trips to multi-day cruises. Boaters can explore urban waterfronts like Cincinnati or travel longer routes while sharing the waterway with commercial traffic.
