In New Jersey: operators must complete an approved boating safety course and pass the state-required in-person exam to obtain a New Jersey Boating Safety Certificate. The certificate is required to operate powered vessels and personal watercraft (PWC/Jet Ski) in New Jersey. A separate boat license may also be required for operating on non-tidal waters. To earn your New Jersey Boating Safety Certificate, often called a NJ boating license, you must complete an approved boating safety course and pass the state-required in-person exam. If you fail a unit quiz, you’ll restudy the unit and retake the quiz until you pass. You must score at least 70% on unit quizzes and at least 80% on the final exam, with unlimited attempts to pass.
After you complete the state-required in-person exam, you’ll receive a temporary certificate to use while your lifetime New Jersey Boating Safety Certificate is mailed to you.
