Who Needs a Boating Safety Education Identification Card?

The majority of states require boating licenses, and Florida is no exception. Boating safety certification is especially important for younger boaters just starting out and without vessel experience.

If you were born on or after January 1, 1988, and you're operating a vessel with a motor that's 10 horsepower or greater, you need a Florida boaters license.

Those who were born before that date are automatically exempt and are "grandfathered in" for vessel operation on Florida's waterways. 

How to Get a Boating License in Florida: 3 Steps

1. Take an FWC-Approved Boating Safety Course

If you've been cited in the past for boating without a safety card, you may be specifically required to take a classroom-based course. 

2. Pass the Final Exam

You'll be required to take an exam at the end of your course. It's multiple-choice, and in most cases, you'll need a score of at least 75% to pass (this may vary by course provider and the number of exam questions).

After you pass the exam and pay for the course, you can print a temporary certificate, which is valid for 90 days. 

3. Receive Your Permanent Card

Your course provider will send your information to FWC, which will then mail or email your permanent ID card. Make sure you carry that card with you anytime you boat, along with a photo ID, so that you can stay compliant with Florida law and boat with confidence. 

Age Requirements and Exemptions

There's no minimum age requirement to take the boating safety course and receive a Florida boaters license. However, Florida does have age requirements to operate vessels.

For example, you'll need to be 14 or older to operate a PWC (personal watercraft) and 18 or older to rent one. 

If you're not a Florida resident, you have a couple of ways to operate a boat legally in Florida. You can use an equivalent card from your home state if you have one, or obtain a 90-day temporary certificate from an FWC-approved vendor.

You're also exempt from needing the boater card if you're an operator supervised by a qualified adult age 18 or older with a card, or by someone who's age-exempt.
