We're excited to announce that Boat-Ed, in association with the Life Jacket Association, has launched a new online course! The Life Jacket Technician Course is ideal for anyone wanting to learn more about how life jackets work and the types of life jackets for different water activities.
It's also a great course for commercial and professional boaters, aquatic recreation and training employees, as well as life jacket manufacturers and salespeople.
What's in the course? Why should you take it? Keep reading to find out!
Why Is Life Jacket Knowledge Important?
If you've been on a boat before (especially if you've taken a boater education course to operate a boat), you already know that wearing a life jacket is important for water activities. Wearing a life jacket saves lives!
However, understanding how life jackets work and which type of life jacket is ideal for various water activities takes safety to the next level. Not just any old life jacket can keep someone from drowning if it doesn't fit or isn't intended for the activity.
For example, wearing the wrong type of life jacket when riding a jet ski could leave you in a situation where the jacket fails to turn you upright after an accident. This could lead to a more serious situation than if your PFD (personal flotation device) works appropriately and helps you turn face up in the water until help can arrive.
Boat-Ed Teaches Life Jacket Basics (but This New Course Goes Deeper)
Taking the Boat-Ed Course for your state (or our course for Canadians) means you have a good understanding of the importance of life jackets and different types.
However, for professional or commercial boaters who need a deeper understanding of how life jackets work, the new Life Jacket Technician Course is the course you need! It's also ideal for organizations that train employees (like lifeguards) to help keep recreational areas safe for boaters and others enjoying watersports, kayaks, or jet skis.
That's why we teamed up with the Life Jacket Association to develop this course. It's a deep dive into the importance of life jackets, how they've evolved over the years, and how to choose the right style for specific water activities.
The course also guides students through the process of cleaning and maintaining life jackets, ensuring they perform optimally every time they're worn.
Plus, after completing the course, you'll have access to exclusive offers on tools, gear, and services.
How Can I Take the Course?
Online boater education courses are convenient, and this new course is no exception!
The Life Jacket Technician Course is available through Boat-Ed.
After completing the course, you can print your Certificate of Completion.
How Long Does the Course Last?
You can take the course at your own pace! However, in general, the course takes less time to complete than the boater education course for your state.
The course includes four units covering:
The history of life jackets
How to Select a Life Jacket
How to Properly Size and Fit a Life Jacket
How to Clean Life Jackets (and Maintain Them)
With this advanced knowledge, you'll be ready to help boaters and people in the professional or commercial boating industries choose and maintain life jackets; you're helping save lives!
