Boaters may notice something is a little different about the Boat-Ed course for Canadians. Starting this week, we've given the course a "hull" new update with an interactive enhancement, making the boater safety learning experience more fun — and faster!

Approved by Transport Canada, this new interactive, online experience not only prepares boaters to travel waterways safely, but it also meets Canada's official requirements for boater education for safe and legal boating.

New boat owners and operators can enjoy the learning experience while putting safety first this season!

What Changed?

Boat-Ed has reinvented the way boaters obtain a boating license. Check out the video above for a preview!

The original version of the Boat-Ed online boater education course for Canadian students was a straightforward (yet engaging) style of learning, with text to read and quizzes to take. With this latest course update, students experience a story-driven way to learn boating safety essentials, hosted by a virtual instructor to guide them through their journey!

Boat-Ed features the story of Fogbow and includes:

  • Interactive simulations and hands-on lessons for students to work through real-life scenarios that prepare them for boating
  • No need for “endless” reading (i.e., it's the opposite of textbook-style learning)
  • An enhanced course structure that was previously unavailable for students in Canada

In other words, you won't find this style of boater education offered anywhere else in Canada!

What Are the Enhanced Features?

While the newly enhanced Boat-Ed course is (we believe) the most fun and entertaining way to learn critical boating safety information, it packs more features than simply "information."

Students will enjoy:

  • Reference material (the study guide and glossary) readily available to deepen their understanding of the subject matter.
  • Offline mode to save lesson and exam progress to complete the course from anywhere (regardless of network connectivity).
  • The freedom to complete the course in one or multiple sittings (again, saved progress).
  • The ability to revisit lessons at any point to refresh knowledge.
  • Choose-your-own-instructor with personality and ethnicity choices.
  • A mobile-friendly experience you can enjoy on any device.
  • No timers. Finish the course in less time than most standard courses.

These features allow students to choose their experience, learn at their own pace, and never worry about blocking hours of time to start and finish a required boater education course. Start and stop as you have time to learn!

Who Is Ideal for the Interactive Boat-Ed Course?

Anyone who wants to learn about boat safety (or needs to get their PCOC to boat legally in Canada)!

More specifically, this interactive course is ideal for:

  • Young boaters who may struggle to stick with and retain information from a more traditional-style course.
  • Anyone of any age who prefers to learn information in a game-style format.

Our interactive course delivers high-quality graphics and a virtual course instructor that guides you through various "real boating" scenarios to boost knowledge in a way you can carry with you onto the water.

It's an excellent way to get the whole family certified for safe boating.

Do I Get My PCOC After Taking the Course?

Yes! After completing the course and passing the final exam, you've earned your PCOC.

Boat-Ed's interactive course is approved by Transport Canada and meets the boater education requirement.

Immediately, you receive a digital version you can access on a mobile device or print. Then, students will receive a "real" card shortly after passing the final exam. Carry this card with you every time you hit the water on a motorized vessel.

Remember: A PCOC never expires, but you must have one to boat legally in Canada.

When and Where is the Interactive Course Available?

Our enhanced Boat-Ed course is now available for boaters in any Canadian province. Students can sign up for and take the course right here through our Canadian course page.

About Boater Education and Boat-Ed

Boater education saves lives on the water!

Transport Canada requires boat operators to pass a boater safety education course before operating a boat or PWC (personal watercraft) on the water. Only an approved safety course — like Boat-Ed — meets this requirement.

The course provides essential information on responsible boating practices, right-of-way rules, etiquette, safety equipment, navigation, emergency procedures, accident avoidance, and more to keep boat operators, passengers, and others safe on the water.

The enhanced Boat-Ed course offers a modern, flexible, and engaging experience designed to help users gain real-world skills quickly. With personalized instruction, hands-on simulations, and the ability to learn at your own pace, Boat-Ed for Canada ensures students are prepared, confident, and ready to get on the water faster and more confidently than any other course on the market.
