How to Get Your Oregon Boating Education Card

When you've confirmed that you need an Oregon boating license, follow these steps to complete the course and receive your Oregon Boating Education Card.

Step 1: Enroll in an OSMB-approved boating safety course.

Create your Boat-Ed account, pay the course fee, and access your student dashboard right away. You must be at least 12 years old to apply for an Oregon Boating Education Card.

Step 2: Pass the final exam.

Step 3: Print your temporary card.

After passing, print your temporary Oregon Boating Education Card immediately, or request a PDF by email. The temporary card is valid for 30 days while your permanent card is processed.

Oregon's education requirement applies to all operators of motorboats over 10 horsepower. There is no birth-year exemption. Unlike most states, every operator regardless of age must hold an Oregon Boating Education Card.

Other age requirements to keep in mind include:

  • Operators under 12 may not operate any motorboat under any circumstances.
  • Operators ages 12–15 may operate independently on vessels 10 HP or less with a card, and may operate vessels over 10 HP only with a supervising card-holder age 16 or older on board.
  • For PWCs, the supervising operator must be at least 18.
