What Is the Minimum Age to Get an Ohio Boating License?

The minimum age to get an Ohio boating license (also called an Ohio Boater Education Certificate) is 16 to independently operate a personal watercraft (PWC) such as a Jet Ski.
For motorboats, Ohio does not set a hard minimum age, but ties the education requirement to birth date: anyone born on or after January 1, 1982, must complete an approved boating safety course to operate a motorized vessel of more than 10 horsepower on Ohio waters.
Operators under 12 may not operate a PWC under any circumstances. Operators ages 12 to 15 may operate a PWC only with direct adult supervision.
Today, we talk through the minimum age requirements, who needs a certificate, and how to get an Ohio boating license.

What Is the Minimum Age to Operate a Boat in Ohio?
Ohio does not set a hard minimum age for motorboat operation. The education requirement is tied to birth date and horsepower: anyone born on or after January 1, 1982, who operates a vessel with a motor of more than 10 horsepower must hold a valid Ohio Boater Education Certificate.
For personal watercraft, specific age minimums apply.
- Children under 12 may not operate a PWC under any circumstances, not even with an education certificate.
- Children ages 12 to 15 may operate a PWC only if they are under the direct supervision of an adult who is at least 18 and onboard, and both the child and the supervising adult (if born on or after January 1, 1982) must hold valid education certificates.
- The minimum age to independently operate a PWC is 16.
Who Needs an Ohio Boating License?
Do you need a boating license in Ohio this season?
Anyone born on or after January 1, 1982, who operates a vessel with a motor of more than 10 horsepower on Ohio waters must carry a valid Ohio Boater Education Certificate. The certificate must be carried on the vessel and available for inspection by an Ohio Natural Resources Officer at all times while operating.
Ohio accepts a digital copy displayed on a phone as valid proof of your certificate. Note that the education law also applies to supervising adults. If a supervising adult was born on or after January 1, 1982, they must also hold a valid certificate.
