Course Outline

Seasickness is discomfort a person can experience while on board a pleasure craft that is underway. Seasickness can be caused by your body sensing one motion and your eyes seeing a different motion. For example, if you are below deck while the pleasure craft is riding heavy waves, you may not see the waves, but your body will feel them. This could make you seasick.

Symptoms of Seasickness

  • Lethargy
  • Drowsiness
  • Nausea
  • Sweating
  • Vomiting

Treatment of Seasickness

  • Stop the motion, if possible.
  • Do not attempt to perform tasks because seasickness disrupts concentration.
  • Sit or lie down on the deck and look at the horizon, but avoid direct sunlight. You also may sit or lie down in a cabin in the centre of the pleasure craft, where it is more stable and movement is reduced.
  • Take a motion sickness medication, preferably before you go out on the water. These drugs may either sedate you or reduce your symptoms of nausea and vomiting.
