Some offences are criminal, and others are regulatory. The Contraventions Act covers how regulatory offences may be prosecuted. Under the Contraventions Act, those with enforcement authority may serve a person who has committed a contravention with a ticket.

Here are some examples of fines.

Not having the required number of approved lifejackets or PFDs on board $200 for each one
Operating a pleasure craft in a careless manner $250
