Course Outline

Improper Speed or Distance is not maintaining a proper speed or distance while operating a pleasure craft. Operators must follow these restrictions from the Vessel Operation Restriction Regulations (VORRs).

  • It is illegal to operate at greater than an unposted speed limit of 10 km/h (6 mph) within 30 metres (100 feet) of the shore in:
    • The waters of Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta
    • The rivers and lakes in British Columbia and Nova Scotia
    • The Nitinat River and Nitinat Lake, upstream of Nitinat Bar, in British Columbia
    • Bras d’Or Lake in Nova Scotia, inland of a line drawn between Coffin Point and Red Head in Great Bras d’Or Channel and the inland end of St. Peters Canal
  • The speed limit of 10 km/h (6 mph) applies in the provinces listed above unless other speed limits are posted. In Quebec, shoreline speed restrictions apply on specific bodies of water and usually are posted.
  • These restrictions do not apply when:
    • Operating in rivers less than 100 metres (328 feet) wide
    • Operating in canals and buoyed channels
    • Waterskiing while the towing boat is taking off with or dropping a skier by heading directly away from or into the shore at a 90° angle
