Course Outline

These requirements apply to persons operating a vessel in Kansas.

  • Any person born on or after January 1, 1989, must complete an approved boater safety education course in order to operate a motorized vessel, PWC, or sailboat on public waters in Kansas unless they are 21 years of age or older.
  • This requirement does not apply to a person operating a motorized vessel, PWC, or sailboat if he or she is accompanied by and under the direct supervision of a person 18 years of age or older who either:
    • Possesses a certificate of completion of an approved boater safety education course or ...
    • Is legally exempt from the requirement to complete a course because they are 21 years of age or older.
  • No one under the age of 12 may operate a motorized vessel, including a PWC, without direct and audible supervision even if they have completed an approved boater safety education course.
