What do people need to know about the age and education level they have to have to be able to have a boat here in Missouri?

Officer Davis

If you’re going to operate a boat or personal watercraft, you have to be at least 14 years of age to operate by yourself. On top of that, you have to have taken and passed a boating safety course. You have to carry proof with you that you’ve taken that course, along with a photo ID. If you don’t want to carry your boating card and your ID, you can get an endorsement on your driver’s license and carry just your driver’s license for you. If you’re under the age of 14—so let’s say you’re 12 years old—you can operate a boat or personal watercraft as long as there’s somebody 16 years of age supervising with you.

All really good things to know. And, you’ve got to carry the ID, right? So, if you’re taking this course, get your ID or little proof of it, put in your wallet, and you’ll be good to go.

Officer Davis

We will throw in there, this course, the boating safety course, is good for a lifetime. So, once you’ve taken and passed the course, you never have to retake it.

Rob

That’s really good to know too. Keep everybody safe on the waterways.
