Course Outline

Small boats can be difficult to see in the best of conditions, particularly by larger, power-driven vessels approaching at high speeds. It is critical that you be able to make yourself as visible as possible.

Use your light(s) in the following situations:

  • When the paddlecraft is away from the dock between sunset and sunrise, including when the boat is moored or anchored
  • When visibility is limited, for example during fog or rain

Check with your state’s boating agency for any specific requirements for navigation lights.
