Course Outline

Stand-up paddleboards can have more than one fin and even as many as five.

  • In lakes, ponds, or other areas with flat water, you should need only one fin.
  • When paddling in surf, you might want to have three or more fins.

Fins usually are made of fiberglass or nylon.

  • Fiberglass fins provide the most stability, but they are rigid and may break on rocks or in shallow water.
  • Nylon fins are more flexible and may be the better choice if you usually paddle in smaller or shallower bodies of water.
